Retinyl Palmitate

RETINYL PALMITATE

The gentlest, weakest retinoid on the shelf — two conversion steps away from doing what retinol does.

skin conditioningCAS 79-81-2

Why it works

Retinyl palmitate must be converted to retinol and then to retinoic acid, losing potency at each step. That makes it the mildest cosmetic retinoid: a reasonable entry point for reactive skin, but expectations should be scaled down accordingly.

Direct clinical trials of retinyl palmitate for wrinkles are sparse and mostly old or combined with other actives. It plausibly delivers a diluted retinol effect, but if skin tolerates retinol, the evidence says use retinol.

Safety, without the fear

Anchored to regulatory assessments — not hazard lists. Dose makes the poison; these are the conclusions at real-world cosmetic use.

SCCS · EU scientific safety committee

Covered by the SCCS vitamin A assessment behind the EU's 2024 concentration caps (retinol equivalents; Regulation 2024/996). The same pregnancy precaution as other retinoids applies by convention.
