Allantoin

ALLANTOIN

A classic soothing agent from comfrey (now made synthetically) — gentle, boring, and useful.

skin conditioningskin protectingsoothingCAS 97-59-6

Why it works

Allantoin is a keratolytic-in-miniature and skin protectant: it softens the outer horny layer, supports desquamation, and calms minor irritation. The mechanism work is old and mostly preclinical; its reputation rests on a century of tolerability more than on modern trials.

Allantoin appears in barrier creams that calm irritation in small studies, but it is almost never tested alone. Rated honestly: plausible mechanism, long safe history, thin isolated evidence.

Anchored to regulatory assessments — not hazard lists. Dose makes the poison; these are the conclusions at real-world cosmetic use.
